Classic Google and the AI answer engines
Our shorthand for the surfaces that mediate search in 2026: classic Google plus AI answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok, and Microsoft Copilot.

This framing sits at the center of our product. Discovery is no longer one search box. A buyer researching a purchase in 2026 might ask Google, scan an AI Overview, ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, cross-check in Perplexity, and read what Copilot surfaces in their work tools, all before visiting a website. A brand that ranks first on Google and is invisible in ChatGPT is not winning.
Each of these surfaces claims a non-trivial slice of intent-stage attention and each behaves differently. Classic Google still carries the most volume. AI Overviews sit on top of that index. ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok are conversational engines that cite when grounded with search. Perplexity is citation-first by design. Gemini powers both the standalone app and Google's Overviews. Copilot brings Bing's index and OpenAI models into Microsoft's ecosystem.
The point of the framing is coverage. Optimizing for Google alone leaves the AI answer engines unmeasured. Our audit scores the signals these engines read, and our tracking samples six AI answer engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, and Google AI Overviews. We do not measure Copilot, because no public API returns its answers. So a brand can see, for example, that it is strong on classic technical SEO but failing crawler readability, which means it is fine on Google and absent everywhere a model has to read raw HTML.
