AI Overviews
Google's generative answer block, powered by Gemini, that appears above the classic search results and synthesizes an answer from multiple cited sources.

AI Overviews are the generative summaries Google shows at the top of many search results pages. Introduced broadly in May 2024 (evolving from the Search Generative Experience labs project), they use Gemini to compose an answer from pages in Google's index and surface a small set of cited links.
For publishers, Overviews are a double-edged surface. On informational queries they can satisfy intent in place, which depresses click-through to the underlying pages; independent measurement through 2025 showed meaningful CTR declines on queries that trigger an Overview. On the other hand, being one of the cited sources puts the brand name in front of the user at the exact moment of the answer, which is valuable even without a click.
Google has been explicit that there is no markup or file that forces inclusion. Eligibility comes from the same ranking systems that produce the classic results, so the route in is conventional: rank well for the query, answer the precise question, structure passages cleanly, and ship entity-clarifying schema. The content most often pulled into Overviews is concise, directly responsive, and corroborated by other authoritative sources.
