Answer Engine OptimizationAEO
The practice of structuring content so that answer engines, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews, can extract and cite it directly in a generated answer.

Answer Engine Optimization is the broad category for getting a brand or page surfaced inside a machine-generated answer rather than inside a list of ten blue links. The term predates the LLM era (it was used for featured snippets and voice assistants) but its meaning sharpened once ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews started synthesizing answers from multiple sources and citing a handful of them.
The mechanics differ from classic SEO in three ways. First, the unit of optimization is the passage, not the page: an answer engine lifts a 100-to-170-word block that directly answers a question, so the question and its answer must be co-located in the markup. Second, the engine is reading raw HTML, not a rendered DOM, because the major AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript. Third, citation is a function of perceived trust (entity recognition, schema, corroboration across sources) more than of raw backlinks.
We treat AEO as the parent term. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the generative-citation subset, and AIO (AI Overviews Optimization) is the Google-Overviews-specific subset. Marketing teams use the three interchangeably; in our methodology we keep them distinct so a finding can name the exact surface it affects.
