Zero-click search
A search that ends without a click to any website, because the answer is shown directly in the results via a snippet, AI Overview, or knowledge panel.

A zero-click search is one where the user gets their answer on the results page itself and never clicks through to a website. It happens when a featured snippet, AI Overview, knowledge panel, or direct answer (a calculation, a definition, a sports score) satisfies the query in place. Zero-click searches have grown for years and accelerated sharply with AI Overviews, which are designed to answer in the results.
For publishers this is a structural challenge, particularly for informational content whose entire value was the click. If the answer is shown without attribution-driven traffic, the page that did the work gets less of the reward. Independent studies through 2025 documented meaningful organic-traffic declines on queries that trigger AI Overviews, which is the sharpest version of the zero-click trend.
The strategic responses are several. Shift content investment toward queries where the user still must act, transactional, comparison, and local intents that a snippet cannot fully resolve. Optimize to be the cited source even when the click does not happen, because being named in the answer carries brand value and is the new currency of visibility. And build brand and entity recognition so that when the user does eventually act, they come to you directly. We frame the AI-visibility pillar around winning the citation, not just the click, precisely because of this shift.
