Striking-distance keyword
A keyword where the site already ranks in roughly positions 5 to 15, where a focused on-page push has the highest expected return.

A striking-distance keyword is one you are already close on. Conventionally that means ranking somewhere in positions 5 to 15, the bottom of page one and the top of page two, where a modest, well-targeted improvement can move you into the positions that actually get clicks. It is the highest-ROI work in foundational SEO because the hardest part, earning enough relevance and authority to rank at all, is already done.
The reason it pays so well is the shape of the click-through curve. Click-through drops steeply with position: position one captures a large multiple of position five, and page two captures almost nothing. Moving a query from position 11 to position 4 can multiply its traffic several times over, often with a fraction of the effort it would take to rank a brand-new page.
You find striking-distance terms in Search Console's Performance report, where the average position per query is real data, not an estimate. The work to close the gap is usually on-page: tighten the title and heading to match the query, add the specific sub-answers the query implies, improve internal links to the page from relevant hubs, and refresh stale sections. We flag striking-distance queries when Search Console is connected, because that is the only reliable source of true position data.
