Google Search Console is the official, free interface between a site owner and Google Search. It is the source of truth for several things you cannot reliably get anywhere else: which of your pages are indexed and why others are not, the actual queries that bring impressions and clicks, your average position per query, Core Web Vitals field status, mobile usability, structured-data validity, and any manual actions or security issues.

The Performance report is the most useful for strategy because it shows real query-level data, the impressions, clicks, click-through rate, and position for the searches you actually appear in. This is where striking-distance opportunities surface: queries where you rank in positions 5 to 15 and a focused push has the highest expected return. The Index Coverage report is the most useful for technical hygiene.

Verifying the property is a prerequisite for the deeper checks. Once verified, Search Console data can be pulled via its API, which is how an audit tool reconciles a site's intended state against Google's actual view of it: index coverage diffs, query opportunities, and field performance. Until a site is verified, those checks ship at lower confidence because the tool is inferring rather than reading Google directly.
