The local pack is the block Google shows for queries with local intent: a map followed by three business listings, each with a name, rating, category, and contact actions. It sits above the classic organic results for "near me" and city-qualified queries, which makes it the single most valuable real estate in local search. The three slots capture the bulk of clicks, calls, and direction requests for local queries.
Ranking in the pack is governed by a different system than classic organic, with three broad factors Google names: relevance (how well the business matches the query, driven heavily by the Google Business Profile and its primary category), distance (proximity to the searcher, which is why pack results are personalized by location), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed the business is, from reviews, citations, links, and overall web presence).
Because distance is a factor, pack rank is location-dependent: you can rank first from one neighborhood and not appear from another, which is why local rank tracking uses a grid of points rather than a single position. The levers to climb are a complete, correctly categorized profile, consistent citations, review velocity and response, and local content. We track pack rank by query across a geographic grid and tie movements back to the underlying signals.
