NAP consistency
The match of a business's Name, Address, and Phone number across every place it is listed online. Inconsistency confuses ranking systems.

NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number, the core identity facts of a local business. NAP consistency is whether those facts match exactly across every place the business appears: its own site, Google Business Profile, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Facebook, and the dozens of industry directories. When they match, ranking systems are confident they are looking at one business; when they drift, the systems hedge.
The drift is usually small and accidental: "Suite 230" on one site, "Ste. 230" on another, "230" on a third, a tracking phone number on one listing and the real line on another, an abbreviated versus spelled-out street name. To a human these are obviously the same business. To an algorithm matching entities across a noisy web, they can read as separate entities, which dilutes the prominence signal and can suppress local-pack rank.
The fix is to choose one canonical NAP format and enforce it everywhere, correcting each listing to match exactly. At scale this is what citation-management tools automate. For the AI surfaces the stakes are the same or higher: an engine deciding which business to recommend wants corroborated, consistent facts, and inconsistent NAP undermines that confidence. We audit NAP across the highest-authority citation sources and flag every drift.
