Who AI engines cite on AI agency queries
On "best AI agency" questions, AI engines lean on agency directories, vendor partner directories, and published lists. Independent agencies break in with readable sites, specific services, and corroborated case studies.

Ask an AI assistant to recommend an AI development agency and the sources behind the answer are usually agency directories and review sites such as Clutch, vendor partner directories, analyst and media roundups, and the sites of a few well-known consultancies. The mix varies by engine and by the specificity of the question, and it changes quickly in a young category, which is why we measure it per audit rather than publish a fixed ranking.
Directories win generic questions for the same reason comparison sites win in any vertical: they present many vendors in a consistent format with reviews. An independent agency rarely wins "best AI agency". It can win "agency that builds RAG systems for law firms", "who can evaluate our LLM for hallucinations", or "voice agent developers in Toronto", where its own service and case-study pages are the most specific source available.
Three things decide whether those pages get cited. They must be readable by the crawlers, so render parity comes first. They must be specific, with named techniques, stacks, and outcomes. And they must be corroborated: client names and reviews on the directories, case studies the client also references, team members with public technical work, and partner listings that match what the site claims. Our audit shows which sources each engine relies on for your target questions and which of your pages are closest to being chosen.
