Citation oligarchy

The observed pattern that AI engines concentrate their citations on a small set of trusted sources, led by Wikipedia, Reddit, and major reference sites.

Citation oligarchy is the term we use for the heavy concentration of AI citations among a few highly trusted domains. When a model grounds an answer, it does not sample the web evenly. Independent measurement has repeatedly found that a small number of sources, Wikipedia foremost, account for a disproportionate share of factual citations, with Reddit, major news outlets, and category-specific authorities filling out the rest.

Two structural facts reinforce this. First, Google signed a content-access partnership with Reddit reported at sixty million dollars per year, which elevated Reddit's presence across Google surfaces. Second, Wikipedia's neutral, corroborated, entity-anchored content is exactly what a model trusts, so it gets cited far above its share of the web.

The strategic reading is uncomfortable but clear: page-level optimization is necessary and not sufficient. To be cited, a brand needs presence in the oligarchy, a Wikipedia or Wikidata entity, organic Reddit discussion, mentions in the publications the engines trust, and consistent facts across them. This is why our local and brand audits include entity-graph health, not just on-page checks.
