Foundational pillar / check in-page-repetition

In-page repetition and template text

A measured fact about the page: sentences repeated within it, and, on multi-page audits, how much of its text appears word for word on other pages we crawled.

What this check measures

Full sentences that appear more than once in the main content of an English page. Whole blocks repeated exactly (carousel slides, read-more toggles) count once, and short calls to action are ignored. On audits that crawl several pages, we also report the share of the page's sentences that appear word for word on each other crawled page, which is how city and service templates show up.

Why it matters

Repeated text makes a page longer without telling the reader more, and pages built from one template with only the city name changed give a buyer little reason to trust them. Bing's Webmaster Guidelines name "Excessive repetition" among the things that can reduce visibility. Google's spam policies describe scaled content abuse as many pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings with little value for users; we report repetition as a fact and never as a policy finding about your site.

How we score it

A LOW finding when several sentences repeat, or one repeats many times, or when most of the page appears on two or more other crawled pages. Never above low. The thresholds are our methodology and are not published.

Confidence-flag rules

HIGH confidence on the counts, which are exact on the HTML we crawled. Other pages are compared by their visible text, which includes their navigation and footer, so a short page that shares a long footer can read as more templated than it is.

Common mistakes

  • Repeating the same paragraph in several sections so each section "stands alone".
  • Building location pages that differ only in the city name.
  • Treating this as a duplicate-URL issue. Canonical tags solve duplicate URLs; they do not make repeated text more useful.

How to fix it

Say each point once, where it fits best, and link to it from the other places. On location or service pages built from a template, add what is specific to that page: the team there, local results, local questions and real photos.
