Bing Webmaster Tools verification

We look for the two verification methods visible from outside (a msvalidate.01 meta tag or a BingSiteAuth.xml file). Finding one is a pass. Not finding one proves nothing, so it is advisory guidance, never a score.

What this check measures

Whether your homepage carries a <meta name="msvalidate.01"> tag, and, when it does not, whether /BingSiteAuth.xml returns a Bing verification file. The file fetch counts against the small per-audit budget for same-host fetches; when the budget declines it, the evidence says the file was not checked.

Why it matters

Bing Webmaster Tools is where you submit a sitemap, see crawl errors and, since February 2026, read the AI Performance report: total citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers, cited pages and the grounding queries that led to them. We do not measure Copilot citations ourselves; that report does. Bing's help lists four ways to verify a site: the XML file, the meta tag, a DNS CNAME record, and an import from Google Search Console. The last two leave nothing on the page.

How we score it

Advisory when nothing is visible: it never scores, never counts in coverage and never enters the action plan, and it renders as guidance. When a token is visible it is a measured pass. It never penalizes.

Confidence-flag rules

A found token is HIGH confidence that the site was set up for Bing Webmaster Tools at some point. An absent token is no evidence either way.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Bing reads your Google Search Console data without importing the site.
  • Removing the verification meta tag during a redesign, which can unverify the site.
  • Reading a missing meta tag as proof the site is unverified, when DNS or the XML file may be in use.

How to fix it

Open Bing Webmaster Tools and add the site; importing from Google Search Console is the fastest route. Submit your sitemap, then check the AI Performance report for citations and grounding queries.
