Topical authority

The depth and breadth of a site's coverage of a subject, which signals to engines that the site is a credible source on that topic.

Topical authority is the property of comprehensively covering a subject area rather than scattering a few pages across many. When a site addresses a topic from every relevant angle, the definitions, the comparisons, the how-tos, the edge cases, the related sub-topics, search engines accumulate evidence that the site is an authority on that topic, and individual pages rank more easily because they sit inside a credible cluster.

The practical framework, popularized by Koray Tugberk Gubur, is the topical map: enumerate every entity, question, and sub-topic in your subject space, then build content that covers the map, internally linked so the cluster reads as a coherent whole. Depth-per-cluster is the metric: a site with three thin articles on a topic loses to one with twenty interlinked pieces that cover the space.

Topical authority is also the strongest defense against the AI era. An engine deciding whom to cite on a topic favors sources that demonstrably know the whole topic, not one-off pages. And it is the lock-in that comes from coverage: a brand that has built a deep, interlinked map is hard to dislodge because a competitor has to rebuild the entire space, not just one page. Our audit clusters a site's content and scores depth per cluster, then recommends the next pieces by gap times opportunity.
